Testing justice at its limits: when should the State have the right to take a life?
The Indian Special Commission on Capital Punishment (ISCCP) is a committee formed to discuss one of the most controversial aspects of the Indian legal system: the death penalty. The delegates of ISCCP will be re-evaluating how capital punishment is applied, challenged and justified in India. Through analysing high-stakes legal cases ranging from heinous crimes to morally ambiguous cases, this committee's debate lies at the intersection of law, morality, and the consequences of human error.
The ISCCP brings together legal, political, and social perspectives to debate the extent of judicial discretion, the role of public sentiment, and the balance between justice and human rights. As discussions progress from individual cases to broader questions of legality and reform, delegates must confront a difficult question: Is the State an instrument of retributive justice, or simply the final arbiter of life?
