DISEC Crisis Committee Report

The DISEC Committee was originally formed to discuss the security crisis in the Sahel. At the start of the session, the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, addressed the General Assembly, stating that corruption in nations had allowed terrorism, illegal arms, and trafficking to take place. During the speech, a hooded assassin infiltrated the audience and assassinated the Secretary General after stabbing him multiple times inside the United Nations building. Before leaving, the assassin said, “The organiser sends their regards”. This triggered a debate on international security and accountability. 

The delegates began to question and accuse one another, only worsening the situation in the Sahel. The United States urged the countries to stop exchanging allegations and to start working together against terrorist groups, not individual countries, which were in charge of smuggling drugs, illegal arms, and regional instability. France questioned how the assassin could come in the first place and asked if anything the Secretary General had been saying was recovered. Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) declared that funding for terrorist organisations was not shameful and argued that international counter-terrorism had been ineffective. The delegation also suggested that they might know who was secretly funding armed groups.
