Unseen victims

By Zera Parekh (Del of Associated Press) Everyday over 2,000 civilians die amidst war! The reason behind this is uncoordinated military attacks and bad evacuation drills. In places like China, civilians endure massacres and bombs by the Japanese. This poses the question: should civilians lose their lives just because the military isn’t organised?

That is why countries like China, Greece, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Ireland proposed some solutions. China claimed Japan had committed several war crimes and killed civilians in mass number. They believed it would be best to create a crime document commission and establish an accurate war record. This way no nation can stand above international law and not face consequences for their crimes. The United Kingdom aims to send aid to various countries that have either recently been invaded or are currently under attack. They say that the only actual way to ensure peace and calm is to continue military progress and make organised plans. On the other hand, Greece believes that the solution to win the war is an unhindered form of military and military aid to smaller European countries. 

But civilian deaths are not the only impact war has on this world. Think about the amount of resources being wasted and used! How are bombs made? How many resources get used when you send food for your military? That is why Australia strongly believed that surviving the war is more important than winning. Similarly Yugoslavia believed that aid isn’t the solution. An approximate of 17,000 people died in a city that claimed they would protect them. 17,000 refugees lost their lives because of a lie! Protection isn’t about space, it's about capability. It’s about whether you have the resources to keep these people safe. It’s about whether you have enough military power. That is why Yugoslavia put forward an idea. What if people joined a declaration where people who harmed civilians would get prosecuted. Solutions like this are essential ideas that are needed. 

In contrast, there were some countries with a very different view. For example France. France believed that while winning the war is essential, saving civilians is more important. They believed that “victory is measured by the amount of lives preserved”. Although not all countries think this strongly about the civilian deaths, this thought process is vital for a safe and secure refuge place. 

To the shock of every single delegate in this committee, the United States has acquired the necessary items needed to create a bomb of mass destruction. Will this bomb be used against AXIS or will it be used against the allies? This question was at large during the committee. In an intense open floor, accusations poured out like water. From “The United States is narcissistic” to “The United States is a traitor”. No matter how much the United Kingdom and their allies helped the US, yet they chose betrayal. They made the war harder to win and indirectly helped harm civilians. Hence, Czechoslovakia assumed that the United States only cares about their own people. They said the US only involved themselves when they were under attack. Pearl harbour led to the US becoming delusional about attacks. This bomb, that the US is making, will it be powerful enough to scare AXIS into retreating or will it simply escalate the war? 

In conclusion, war is a dangerous thing to be involved in. From the fear of death to the immense after affects, war cannot be taken lightly. If taken casually many civilians could die or their lives could be at risk. That is why the JCC committee is an essential part of the solution to stopping WWI. Proposals like international law above everything or an accurate war record are good ideas. Overall, if the correct solution is proposed all the unseen victims of war and all the unseen culprits will be exposed.
